This is the “we have a morning from Port Douglas / we landed in Cairns yesterday” plan. Success is granite river + rainforest boardwalks + a cultural gateway, not a ferry gamble.
From Port Douglas budget roughly 30–40 minutes; from Cairns about 80 km / 1.25–1.5 hours on the Captain Cook Highway. A half-day on the ground is often a full calendar morning once you count the Centre shuttle.
There is no QPWS park-entry ticket. The shuttle is a Centre fee (1 Apr 2026–31 Mar 2027: adult $15.50 / child $7.75 / family $38.75). The Centre says there is no footpath from the car park — take the shuttle. Last return 4:30pm, not Christmas Day. Confirm live on mossmangorge.com.au.
Always check parks.qld.gov.au alerts and shuttle hours the morning you go. This itinerary is a planning skeleton, not live track status. Do not put the ferry on this clock.
Track status, shuttle hours, ferry status, camping bookings and weather change — verify on Queensland Parks, mossmangorge.com.au and daintreeferry.com.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no single “Daintree entry fee.”

Timeline
Night before
Pack and agree a leave-by time
Primary = Mossman Gorge day-use walks. Optional = Centre cultural walk only if already booked. Pack grip shoes, 1–2 L water, insect repellent, rain shell. Screenshot shuttle hours and park alerts on Wi-Fi. Say out loud: no ferry, no swim, no Manjal Jimalji.
07:30–08:15
One highway, one car park
Captain Cook Highway → Johnston Road / Mossman Gorge Road → Centre car park. No ferry. No inventing a verge park on Mossman Gorge Road. Fuel in Mossman or Port Douglas. Earlier in July holidays.
08:15–09:00
Centre → shuttle → Baral Marrjanga
Use Centre toilets. Pay the shuttle (Centre fee, not a park ticket). Last return 4:30pm, not Christmas Day. At the day-use area start with Baral Marrjanga (660 m, Grade 1), then Lower River and Rex Creek Bridge if energy remains.
09:00–10:30
River views, no swim
Photograph the granite river from the formed tracks. Do not enter the water — currents, boulders, rapid rises; fatalities recorded. Picnic at the day-use area. Optional Rainforest Circuit (~3.4 km, Grade 3) only if the group is still fresh.
If flagging
Stop after Baral Marrjanga
You already had the gorge. Shuttle back, café at the Centre, done. That is a successful morning — not a failure.
11:00–12:00
Last-shuttle buffer
Be on a shuttle with margin before 4:30pm. Reset at the Centre or Mossman / Port Douglas. The ferry is tomorrow’s plan, not a 2pm add-on.
Do not
Stack the other section
Cape Tribulation, Mount Sorrow and Manjal Jimalji are different days and different starts. A “quick ferry after lunch” is how people spend the afternoon in a queue.

Parking & access tips
- Use the Centre car park. Do not invent parking on Mossman Gorge Road.
- Peak dry-season late morning is the busy shuttle window — arrive earlier.
- No footpath from the car park (Centre wording). Take the shuttle.
- Do not leave bags visible.
- Last shuttle 4:30pm is a buffer, not a target.
- Christmas Day: shuttle does not run — this plan is off.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Cape Tribulation and the ferry
- Mount Sorrow
- Manjal Jimalji (Whyanbeel — different start)
- Rainforest Circuit if the group is already happy after Baral Marrjanga
- A swim in the Mossman River — change the destination instead
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers with a morning from Port Douglas or Cairns
- Families and mixed-ability groups
- Anyone who does not want the ferry on this clock
- People googling one “Daintree entry fee” — here you only pay the shuttle
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the group is flagging after Baral Marrjanga, stop
- If someone wants a swim, do not use the Mossman River — change the plan
- If someone wants Cape Tribulation, that is a second day
- If the shuttle is not running (Christmas Day), this plan is off
What success looks like
- One section, granite river from the track, last-shuttle buffer
- No river swim, no ferry queue, no Grade 4
- Notes for tomorrow: Cape Tribulation or rest — not a stacked encore
Next trip upgrade
- Add a booked Centre cultural walk and make it a full unhurried day
- Sleep in Port Douglas and run the Cape Tribulation boardwalk plan the next morning
- Read the Mossman Gorge area page and the fee-split article before you budget

- Baral Marrjanga boardwalkElevated Grade 1 boardwalk at the Mossman Gorge day-use area. The right first 30 minutes after the shuttle. Combine with Lower River and Rex Creek rather than treating it as the whole visit unless mobility requires that.
