Mossman Gorge short walk network
Area: Mossman Gorge section
Guide updated · Track conditions, shuttle and ferry hours, camping bookings and closures…
The signature easy experience: park at Mossman Gorge Centre, take the shuttle to the day-use area, then combine Baral Marrjanga, Lower River Track, Rex Creek Bridge and optionally the Rainforest Circuit. River views over granite — do not enter the water.
Do not pair: Do not pair this network with the Daintree ferry, Mount Sorrow, or Manjal Jimalji on the same clock.
Turnaround: If the group is flagging after Baral Marrjanga, stop. You already had the gorge. Be on a shuttle with margin before 4:30pm.
- Treating the gorge as a warm-up, then adding the ferry and Kulki after lunch.
- Missing the 4:30pm last shuttle because the river “looked like a swim”.
Official Queensland Parks pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.
- Grade 1 boardwalk to Grade 3 circuit
- 30 minutes to about 2 hours
- 660 m to 3.4 km depending on combination
- Effort: easy
- Best for: First-timers, families, mixed-ability groups, half-day without the ferry
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.qld.gov.au before you go. Facts on this page were checked 12 Sept 2026.

Where you start
Mossman Gorge day-use area (via Centre shuttle)
All short walks start at the signed day-use area beyond Mossman Gorge Centre. The Centre is the controlled gateway. The Centre says there is no footpath from the car park and strongly encourages the shuttle — do not invent a road walk.
How to get there
- Drive Captain Cook Highway to near Mossman (~80 km from Cairns / ~30–40 min from Port Douglas), then Johnston Road / Mossman Gorge Road to Mossman Gorge Centre. No ferry. No 4WD.
- Park at the Centre. Pay the shuttle — a Centre fee, not a QPWS park ticket. Published 1 Apr 2026–31 Mar 2027: adult $15.50 / child $7.75 / family $38.75. Confirm on mossmangorge.com.au.
- Shuttle every 15 minutes, 8:00am–5:00pm, last bus from the gorge 4:30pm, not Christmas Day. Be on a return shuttle with margin.
- Use Centre toilets before you board. Screenshot hours and park alerts on Wi-Fi in Port Douglas or Mossman.
How to do it (step by step)
- Arrive, use Centre toilets, take the shuttle. Do not hunt for a footpath from the car park.
- At the day-use area, start with Baral Marrjanga (660 m return, ~30 min, Grade 1 elevated boardwalk) to get your bearings.
- Add Lower River Track (640 m return, ~40 min, Grade 2) and Rex Creek Bridge Track (1.4 km return, ~1 hr, Grade 2) if you’ve still got energy.
- Only then consider the Rainforest Circuit (3.4 km loop, ~2 hr, Grade 3). That is still a day-use walk, not a remote ridge.
- Picnic at the day-use area. Do not enter the river. Return on the shuttle with margin before the 4:30pm last bus.
What to expect
This is a day-use rainforest and river visit, not a wilderness trek. Paths are short and mostly well formed. Baral Marrjanga has wheelchair-accessible elements (confirm current status). You get water over granite, a closed canopy, and the Centre’s cultural welcome.
Eastern Kuku Yalanji (bama) are the Traditional Owners. Joint management is Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and Queensland Parks. Treat Welcome to Country and signed cultural requests as operating rules, not optional colour.
Success is an unhurried boardwalk + river view + last-shuttle buffer. Crowds in July holidays are real. The usual failure is treating this as a warm-up for the ferry.
Who this walk is for
First-timers, families, mixed-ability groups, and anyone who wants Daintree rainforest without the ferry. If someone needs a swim, this is the wrong plan — change the destination, do not enter the river.
Fit walkers who want a granite lookout should read Manjal Jimalji instead — different start (Whyanbeel), different day. Mount Sorrow is north of the ferry.
Day shape and logistics
A realistic half-day: Centre arrival → shuttle → boardwalk + river tracks → picnic → last-shuttle buffer → Port Douglas or Cairns. Adding a booked cultural walk makes it a full, unhurried day.
Bail-outs are easy: every track returns to the day-use area and the shuttle. There is no ridge commitment on this network.
If the shuttle is disrupted, do not invent parking on Mossman Gorge Road. Check the Centre getting-here page that morning. There is no public transport into the gorge itself.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: Baral Marrjanga then Lower River / Rex Creek; or a booked Centre cultural walk as the whole morning.
Weak pairs: the Daintree ferry “quickly after lunch”; Mount Sorrow the same afternoon; Manjal Jimalji as a warm-up. Those are different days, different starts, different clocks.

Extra tips
- Peak dry-season mornings are busy — earlier shuttle = quieter boardwalk.
- Book a Centre cultural walk (e.g. Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks) on official Centre channels if that is your reason for coming.
- After rain, granite and timber are slick. Wear grip shoes.
- This network is not Mount Sorrow and not Manjal Jimalji.
- If the group is flagging after Baral Marrjanga, stop. You already had the gorge.
Often paired with Baral Marrjanga— only if energy and weather allow.
