Quieter-season / wet-season plan

Flexible — often Mossman-only · Best for: November–April trips, cyclone watch, first-timers who dislike queues

In the wet, default to Mossman Gorge day-use and skip remote Grade 4 walks. Noah Beach is often closed. Ferry and roads can stop. Stingers are more frequent.

Wet season (~November–April) means heavy rain, flooded creeks, leeches, cyclone risk and facility closures. Manjal Jimalji has had wet-season closures. Standing official warnings include crocodiles, marine stingers and cassowaries.

Noah Beach camping page: closed from the Friday before Christmas Day to Good Friday. Visiting-safely page: first Sunday after New Year to Good Friday. Official pages disagree — check alerts. Do not drive in to look at a closed camp.

The ferry can still run 5am–midnight including Christmas Day and still close for flood or defects. Check the status page every morning. If it is down, Cape Tribulation by 2WD is off.

A quieter-shoulder plan (late wet / early dry) can still do Cape Tribulation boardwalks if the ferry is running — with extra slack. Mount Sorrow and Bloomfield stay off the default list.

Track status, shuttle hours, ferry status, camping bookings and weather change — verify on Queensland Parks, mossmangorge.com.au and daintreeferry.com.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no single “Daintree entry fee.”

Timeline

  1. Every morning

Alerts + BOM + ferry page

Open park alerts, BOM Cairns and daintreeferry.com.au/status-updates on Wi-Fi. If cyclone, flood or a ferry outage is listed, Mossman Gorge from the south is the sensible fallback. Don’t drive toward a closed road just to look.

  2. Plan A — default

    Mossman Gorge well

Centre, shuttle (not Christmas Day; last return 4:30pm), Baral Marrjanga and river tracks. No swim. Cultural walk if operating. This is a complete wet-season Daintree day.

  3. Plan A — return

    Shuttle buffer, dry reset

Be on a shuttle with margin. Change wet clothes at the Centre or in Mossman / Port Douglas. That is success. Do not “see how the ferry looks” at 3pm.

  4. Plan B — only if green

    Cape Tribulation boardwalks

If the ferry is running and creeks are not in flood: Madja, Dubuji, Kulki. Extra slack on both crossings. Stay on the boards. Be Crocwise. Stingers are more frequent — this is still not a swim.

  5. Plan B — afternoon

    Southbound earlier than you think

Wet-season showers and a defect can still stop the crossing. Leave north earlier than a dry-season day. If you miss a slot, you still ate the boardwalks.

  6. Do not

    Remote Grade 4 or Bloomfield

No Mount Sorrow in wet or cloudy conditions. No Manjal Jimalji if alerts show a wet-season close. No Bloomfield in a 2WD. No walk-up at Noah Beach.

Parking & access tips

  • Wet clay verges eat 2WDs — stay on formed parking.
  • Centre car park for Plan A. Do not invent a road park.
  • If Plan B: leave big vans south of the ferry.
  • After heavy rain, treat unsealed side roads as possibly closed.
  • If the ferry is down, do not wait at the ramp — go to Mossman Gorge.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Mount Sorrow
  • Manjal Jimalji
  • Bloomfield Track
  • Noah Beach if official pages show close
  • A swim — stingers and crocodiles

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • November–April trips and cyclone-watch weeks
  • First-timers who dislike queues
  • Anyone whose booking window hits Noah Beach close dates
  • Groups who will accept Mossman-only as a real Daintree day

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If alerts / BOM / ferry look ugly: Plan A only
  • If the shuttle is not running (Christmas Day): this morning is off
  • If Plan B is green but energy is low: Kulki only
  • If someone wants a Grade 4: not this season’s default

What success looks like

  • You checked three official pages before you left Wi-Fi
  • You did one section well and went home dry enough
  • You did not drive to a closed camp or a closed Grade 4 “just to see”

Next trip upgrade

  • Dry-season Cape Tribulation boardwalk day with an early ferry
  • Book Noah Beach only after you re-check the close-date wording
  • Read Plan your visit for the four fee systems before you budget
