Full day: ferry + Cape Tribulation boardwalks
Full day from Port Douglas or Cairns · Best for: First rainforest-meets-reef day with a 2WD
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
Early ferry, Walu Wugirriga lookout, Madja and Dubuji boardwalks, Kulki lookout/beach — then a protected southbound ferry. No Mount Sorrow on this clock.

This is the classic Cape Tribulation day. The ferry is the chokepoint. Mount Sorrow is a different itinerary.
From Cairns this is a long day once you count the drive both ways. Port Douglas, or a bed in Cow Bay or Cape Tribulation, makes it easier.
The ferry is not a park permit. From 1 July 2026 a car/ute is $35 one-way / $57 return. Hours 5am–midnight including Christmas Day. It can still close for defects — check the status page the morning you leave.
Be Crocwise at beaches, creeks and mangroves. Cassowaries use the road verge. This is not a swim day. Always verify park alerts and ferry status before you drive.
Track status, shuttle hours, ferry status, camping bookings and weather change — verify on Queensland Parks, mossmangorge.com.au and daintreeferry.com.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no single “Daintree entry fee.”

Timeline
Night before
Pre-purchase the ferry
Buy or screenshot tickets, hours and the status page. Pack Be Crocwise habits, insect repellent, 2 L+ water, offline maps, Emergency+. Fill fuel south of the river. Agree out loud: no swim, no Grade 4, no Bloomfield.
06:00–07:00
Port Douglas / Cairns → ferry
Aim to miss the mid-morning northbound queue. Official hours 5am–midnight including Christmas Day. Check daintreeferry.com.au/status-updates before you leave Wi-Fi. If it is closed, switch to the Mossman Gorge half-day — do not invent a Bloomfield workaround. From Cairns leave earlier still.
07:00–08:00
Northbound ferry
Car/ute $35 one-way / $57 return from 1 July 2026. Pedestrian/bike $7 / $8. Stay 5+ m from the water — the ramp is still crocodile habitat. Once you are north, treat reception as limited. Confirm live on daintreeferry.com.au.
08:00–11:00
Lookout + boardwalks
Walu Wugirriga (Mount Alexandra) if the sky is clear, then Madja and Dubuji. Stay on the boards. Mangrove and creek ends are crocodile habitat. Slow for cassowaries on the verge.
11:00–13:30
Kulki
Cape Tribulation lookout and beach time on the formed paths. Lunch from what you carried or village services (outside the park). Be Crocwise. Mount Sorrow trailhead is 150 m up the road — do not start it.
13:30–15:30
Southbound with buffer
Leave Kulki early enough for the mid-afternoon ferry queue. If the ferry is delayed, you still ate the view. That is a successful day.
Do not
Add Mount Sorrow or Bloomfield
Grade 4 and the Bloomfield Track are different products. A late Port Douglas lunch that eats the southbound crossing is how groups sit at the ramp after dark.

Parking & access tips
- Kulki fills late morning in July holidays — boardwalks first or arrive earlier.
- Height and caravans: the road is narrow; leave big vans south of the ferry.
- Park only in signed bays. Do not overflow onto the verge (cassowaries).
- Fill fuel south of the river. Do not rely on north-of-ferry fuel.
- If the ferry is down, do not wait at the water’s edge — switch to Mossman Gorge.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Mount Sorrow
- Bloomfield Track
- Noah Beach set-up
- A swim at Kulki or any creek
- A late café that eats the southbound queue
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First rainforest-meets-reef day in a 2WD
- Groups sleeping in Port Douglas, Cow Bay or Cape Tribulation village
- Families who will stay on formed paths
- Anyone tempted to add Mount Sorrow “because we are already north”
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the ferry status page is closed: Mossman Gorge instead
- If the sky is socked in: skip Walu Wugirriga, keep the boardwalks
- If energy remains after Kulki: sit, do not start Mount Sorrow
- If someone wants a swim: change the destination — not the river or beach here
What success looks like
- Early ferry, two boardwalks, Kulki, southbound buffer
- No swim, no Grade 4, no Bloomfield
- Cassowaries get the road; you get the view from the structure
Next trip upgrade
- Sleep north of the ferry (Cow Bay / Cape Tribulation) and drop the dawn drive
- Book Noah Beach only if height, dates and self-reliance actually fit
- Mount Sorrow is a different itinerary — do not bolt it on
