Remote day: Mount Sorrow
Full hard day (allow 6 hours on trail + ferry) · Best for: Fit, experienced walkers only
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
The day is Mount Sorrow. Early ferry, early start, 3–4 L water, turn around at the lookout, satellite messenger if you carry one. Kulki only as a short stop after, if you’ve still got legs.

Do not combine this with a Mossman Gorge morning or a Noah Beach set-up. Walkers have been lost on this trail. Read the Mount Sorrow trail page before you pack.
Official planning range: 7 km return, Grade 4, allow 6 hours. Trailhead ~150 m past Kulki on Cape Tribulation Road. Same way out and back. No water, no hut, no bail-out except turn around.
The ferry is still the access clock: 5am–midnight including Christmas Day, $35 / $57 car from 1 July 2026. Check status the morning you leave. On the trail well before 10 am. Leave the lookout by about 2 pm.
This is Eastern Kuku Yalanji country. Stay on the marked trail. No camping. Limited reception — 000 needs a signal. Download Emergency+. A satellite messenger is strongly advised.
Track status, shuttle hours, ferry status, camping bookings and weather change — verify on Queensland Parks, mossmangorge.com.au and daintreeferry.com.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no single “Daintree entry fee.”

Timeline
Night before
Alerts, intention, kit
Check park alerts, BOM and ferry status on Wi-Fi. Tell someone the plan and a late-back time. Pack 3–4 L, first-aid, snake bandage, rain shell, food, headlamp, offline maps. Charge a satellite messenger if you carry one. Agree: no Madja, no Dubuji, no swim.
05:00–06:30
Ferry and trailhead
Cross early. Drive to just past Kulki. Park legally without blocking Cape Tribulation Road. On the trail well before 10 am. This is not the Kulki lookout path.
06:30–11:30
Climb — turn around if still going at midday
Steep continuous rainforest climb, log scrambling. Distance markers every kilometre. Stay on the marked trail. If you are still climbing at midday in poor weather, turn around. Descent is the injury window when wet.
By ~14:00
Lookout — then leave
Coast, Snapper Island and reef on a clear day. Cloud is common. The Grade 4 still happened. Do not leave the ridge for a better photo. Walkers have been lost after leaving the marked trail. Official allow 6 hours — protect the reverse clock.
14:00–16:30
Optional Kulki glance, then ferry buffer
If legs remain, walk five minutes at Kulki. Then protect the southbound ferry. Do not add Madja. If you stay north of the river, that was the plan from the night before — not a surprise.
Do not
Stack anything else
No Mossman Gorge morning. No Noah Beach set-up. No Bloomfield. A late café that eats the crossing is how tired groups sit at the ramp.

Parking & access tips
- Park legally at the trailhead without blocking Cape Tribulation Road or emergency access.
- Do not leave valuables visible.
- Kulki car park is a different precinct — do not start the Grade 4 from the lookout path.
- Fill fuel south of the ferry.
- If the ferry is closed, this day is off — switch to Mossman Gorge, do not invent Bloomfield.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Everything except the walk and the ferry
- Madja and Dubuji
- A swim
- Mossman Gorge the same morning
- Starting after 10 am or leaving the lookout after 2 pm
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Fit, experienced walkers who already understand heat and no-bail-out climbs
- Groups who will start early and turn around on time
- Anyone who read the trail page and still wants this day
- Not first-timers who want rainforest-meets-sea photos — that is Kulki
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If alerts or BOM look wet/hot/cloudy: skip — the view vanishes, the risk stays
- If the ferry is closed: Mossman Gorge, not Bloomfield
- If you are still climbing at midday: turn around
- If anyone is not up for Grade 4: do the Cape Tribulation boardwalk day instead
What success looks like
- Early ferry, early start, lookout by ~2 pm, same trail down, ferry buffer
- 3–4 L drunk, marked trail only, someone knew the plan
- Kulki is optional after — not a second walk
Next trip upgrade
- Sleep north of the ferry so the dawn start is not a 5am Port Douglas drive
- Read the Mount Sorrow trail page and the prep article before you pack
- If this felt too compressed, the next Daintree trip is boardwalks + a night, not another Grade 4

- Mount Sorrow ridge trailSteep out-and-back through lowland then upland rainforest to a ridge lookout (~650–680 m) with coast, Snapper Island and reef views on clear days. No water, no facilities, no camping, no bail-out except turn around. Walkers have been lost here.
- Kulki (Cape Tribulation) lookout & boardwalkThe classic Cape Tribulation view: rainforest-clad slopes to sandy beach and rocky headland. Formed lookout and boardwalk from the Kulki day-use area. Be Crocwise and watch for stingers — this is not a swim stop.
