Where you start
Madja boardwalk day-use, Cape Tribulation Road
Signed boardwalk node on Cape Tribulation Road north of the ferry. Conventional 2WD. Combine with Dubuji or Kulki rather than inventing a long walk.
How to get there
- Ferry (5am–midnight including Christmas Day; check status), then Cape Tribulation Road signs to Madja boardwalk / day-use.
- Park in signed bays only. Do not block the road. Cassowaries use verges — slow down.
- Conventional 2WD. High clearance helps after rain. Caravans are a poor idea on this road.
- Confirm the official journey page for current length, grade and any closures before you leave Wi-Fi.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the full formed loop or out-and-back as signed. Stay on the boards.
- Slow down at the mangrove and creek end. That water is crocodile habitat. Keep children on the structure.
- Do not step off toward the mud for a photo. Be Crocwise — 5+ m from the water, no swimming, no fish-cleaning.
- Pair with Dubuji or Kulki. That is a complete easy day.
- Do not treat this as a warm-up for Mount Sorrow.
What to expect
Madja is the rainforest-to-mangrove story in an hour. Formed boardwalk, closed canopy, then tidal forest. It is not a substitute for Kulki’s headland view and not a warm-up for Mount Sorrow.
Stay on the boards. The mangrove and creek end is crocodile habitat. The photo is from the structure.
Official Queensland Parks journey page: 1.2 km circuit, allow 45 minutes. Stay on the boards. Planning range if you linger at the mangrove end is still under an hour.
Who this walk is for
Families, first-timers who already crossed the ferry, and anyone who wants a wet-ground walk without a Grade 4. Mixed-ability groups can do this when Kulki’s car park is full and they still want a formed path.
If the group came only for the postcard headland, go to Kulki first. If they came to swim, change the plan entirely.
Access and day shape
Same ferry and Cape Tribulation Road as Kulki. Easy day shape: Madja + Dubuji + Kulki, then protect the southbound queue.
After rain, timber is slick and mosquitoes come up. Grip shoes and repellent earn their place. There is no ridge commitment — turn around on the same boards.
Check ferry status and park alerts the morning you leave. Reception is limited north of the river.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: Dubuji, then Kulki. Weak pairs: Mount Sorrow “because we are warmed up”; a creek-edge picnic; Bloomfield.
This is not Noah Beach camping. Overnight in the park is a booked QPWS site 5.8 km from the village, height ~3.20 m, no mobile.

Extra tips
- After rain this is a better choice than a dirt pad. Grip shoes still help.
- Mosquitoes and midges are realistic — pack repellent.
- Works in the wet when remote Grade 4 walks are foolish or closed.
- Kulki is the headland view; Madja is the mangrove story. Do both if time remains.
- Printable day shape: full-day Cape Tribulation itinerary on this site.
Often paired with Dubuji— only if energy and weather allow.
