Daintree River & ferry access

The river is not a third park section — it is the access chokepoint between Mossman country and the Cape Tribulation section, plus estuary wildlife (including estuarine crocodiles).

  • Best for: Anyone driving to Cape Tribulation; river-cruise add-ons; understanding Be Crocwise
  • Time: 15–60+ minutes including queues; not a destination to “do” instead of the park
  • Cape Tribulation Road meets the ferry north of Daintree Village / south of Cow Bay. Budget queue time in peak dry season.

Plan the crossing like a timetable, not a surprise

Official hours (checked 12 Sept 2026): 5am–midnight daily, including Christmas Day. Flood or mechanical issues can still stop the crossing — check https://daintreeferry.com.au/status-updates/ the morning you travel. Status page last stamped 7 Jul 2026 as operating normally when we looked. That stamp is not live.

From 1 July 2026 a car/ute is $35 one-way / $57 return (Douglas Shire 2026/27 card). Bicycle and pedestrian $7 / $8. Five-return book $143. Fares update around 1 July each year. Pre-purchase if you can. This site never sells the ticket.

Keep a leave-by time so you are not starting a Mount Sorrow descent after a late southbound queue. Mid-morning northbound and mid-afternoon southbound are the busy windows in the dry.

Four fee systems — never one number

Google suggests a “Daintree National Park entry fee” because people want one ticket. There isn’t one. A is the Mossman Gorge shuttle (Centre). B is this ferry (Douglas Shire / Birdon from 1 July 2026). C is Noah Beach camping (Queensland Parks). D is no recreational walk permit for standard day walks or the two Grade 4 trails.

Mixing them into a single “park ticket” is how visitors overpay in their heads and then argue with the wrong counter. Pay the ferry here. Pay the shuttle at the Centre. Book camping on qld.gov.au/camping. Walk the boardwalks without a permit.

Read the fee-split article on this site before you budget. Then verify live dollars on the official ferry, Centre and camping pages for your travel date.

Queues, status failures and the Mossman fallback

Peak dry-season queues are normal, not a surprise. Pre-purchase, arrive off-peak, and do not stack a Grade 4 start behind a late crossing. If you miss a southbound slot you wanted, you still ate Kulki — that is a successful day.

If the status page or on-site sign says closed, do not invent a Bloomfield workaround in a 2WD. Switch the day to Mossman Gorge: no ferry, shuttle + boardwalks, a clean turnaround to Port Douglas.

Birdon operates the crossing for Douglas Shire from 1 July 2026. Operator changes do not change the rule: screenshot hours and status on home Wi-Fi. Reception is limited once you are committed north.

The river is crocodile habitat

Estuarine crocodiles live in this system. Stay well back from the water’s edge (official Be Crocwise: 5+ m), never swim, never clean fish at the bank, camp well above the high-water mark if you are overnighting outside the park.

Dawn and dusk are feeding windows. Children and dogs (pets are not permitted in the park anyway) do not belong at the waterline for a photo. The ferry ramp is still a river bank.

This page is not a substitute for official Crocwise rules. Read the Be Crocwise article on this site, then the Queensland Government Crocwise page, then behave as if every bank is occupied.

River cruises are a commercial add-on

A Daintree River cruise is a private product, usually from Daintree Village or the south bank, aimed at wildlife viewing. It is not a Queensland Parks tour, not a ferry ticket, and not a substitute for going to Kulki.

If you book one, treat it as a south-of-ferry morning or a wet-season fallback — not something you squeeze between a 10am northbound crossing and Mount Sorrow. Confirm inclusions, crocodile-viewing claims and cancellation rules with the operator.

This site may show optional commercial tour links elsewhere. Official ferry tickets are never affiliated. Do not buy a cruise thinking it includes the crossing or a park permit.

Daintree Village and south-of-ferry logistics

Daintree Village sits south of the crossing — useful for a meal, a bed, or a cruise without committing to Cape Tribulation Road. It is not inside the national park and not a substitute for Mossman Gorge or Kulki.

Fill fuel south of the river. Do not rely on north-of-ferry fuel for a return. Screenshot ferry hours, status, shuttle hours if you also plan Mossman, and park alerts while you still have a signal.

Emergency: 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+. The river is not a place to wait for help at the water’s edge. If the crossing fails, your park day is Mossman Gorge or a village reset — not a bank-side picnic.

Highlights at a glance

  • Daintree River ferry — 5am–midnight daily including Christmas Day
  • Car/ute from 1 July 2026: $35 one-way / $57 return (confirm live on daintreeferry.com.au)
  • Estuary wildlife — treat every bank as crocodile habitat
  • Daintree Village as a south-of-ferry meal / stay option
  • Fallback when the ferry is down: Mossman Gorge, not Bloomfield
  • Status page can flip for defects — check the morning you leave

Practical tips

  • Screenshot the ferry tickets, hours and status page before you lose reception north of the river.
  • If the ferry is down, Cape Tribulation by car is not happening that day — switch to Mossman Gorge.
  • Pre-purchase in peak dry season. Mid-afternoon southbound is the queue that eats Mount Sorrow.
  • Stay 5+ m back from the water. The ramp is still crocodile habitat.
  • Fill fuel south of the river.
  • Do not merge ferry, shuttle and camping into one budget line.
  • A river cruise is optional and commercial — it does not include the crossing.

Facilities & services

  • Ferry approaches and payment (EFTPOS/cash — confirm current)
  • Published 5am–midnight daily including Christmas Day — still check status
  • Daintree Village services south of the crossing (outside the park)
  • No QPWS visitor centre at the ramp
  • No reliable fuel you should plan on north of the river
  • Limited mobile — treat the north bank as a comms cliff

Confirm toilets, parking and open facilities on the day via official sources and on-site signage.

FAQ — Ferry & river

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is the ferry part of the national park?

No. It is a Douglas Shire Council crossing, commercially operated (Birdon from 1 July 2026). Queensland Parks does not sell the ticket.

What does the ferry cost?

From 1 July 2026 a car/ute is $35 one-way / $57 return; bicycle and pedestrian $7 / $8; five-return book $143 (Douglas Shire 2026/27 card, checked 12 Sept 2026). Verify live on daintreeferry.com.au/tickets-prices. Fares typically roll on 1 July.

Does the ferry run on Christmas Day?

Yes — official ferry-info page: 5am–midnight daily including Christmas Day. It can still close for defects or flood. Check the status page the morning you travel.

What if the ferry is closed?

Cape Tribulation by conventional car is off. Do not invent a Bloomfield workaround. Switch to Mossman Gorge (no ferry) or stay south of the river. Check daintreeferry.com.au/status-updates.

Is a river cruise the same as crossing?

No. A cruise is a private wildlife product, usually from the south bank. It does not replace the vehicle ferry and is not a park permit.

Can I walk or cycle across?

Pedestrians and bicycles pay a lower fare ($7 / $8 on the 2026/27 card). You still obey Be Crocwise on both banks. Confirm live fares and any peak-lane rules on the official ferry site.

Does a park pass or shuttle ticket include the ferry?

No. There is no general Daintree entry ticket. Shuttle is a Centre product. Camping is QPWS. The ferry is Council / Birdon. Keep the four systems separate.
