Area: Mossman Gorge section
Guide updated · Track conditions, shuttle and ferry hours, camping bookings and closures…

- Grade 4 — remote, extremely strenuous
- Allow 8+ hours
- 10.6 km return
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Very fit, experienced walkers; not a first Daintree day
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.qld.gov.au before you go. Facts on this page were checked 12 Sept 2026.

Where you start
Whyanbeel Valley / Little Falls Creek approach, ~17 km north of Mossman
Not the Mossman Gorge day-use area. Drive via Miallo / Whyanbeel / Karnak roads. Park off-road after the grid and follow markers about 700 m through private property (respectfully) to the official trailhead.
How to get there
- From Mossman, follow signed roads toward Miallo / Whyanbeel / Karnak — about 17 km. This is a different start to the Centre shuttle walks. No ferry.
- Park off-road after the grid. Do not block farm access. Walk the marked ~700 m through private property to the trailhead. Stay on the marked line.
- Check park alerts before you leave — the trail has had realignments and wet-season closures. Screenshot the official journey page on Wi-Fi.
- No reliable mobile coverage on the climb. Tell someone the plan and a late-back time before you leave Mossman or Port Douglas.
How to do it (step by step)
- Start at first useful light. This is an 8+ hour day with high elevation gain. Same kit as Mount Sorrow: 3–4 L water, first-aid, snake bandage, rain shell, food, headlamp, offline map, satellite messenger strongly advised.
- Climb on the marked trail only. Return the same way. There is no loop and no bail-out except turn around.
- Treat the granite feature / lookout as a turnaround, not a camp. No camping on the trail.
- If weather or legs turn, reverse early. A finished boardwalk day at the Centre is a better outcome than an unfinished Grade 4 in fading light.
- Never walk alone. Groups of four are safer. Do not add the Centre gorge network “on the way home” as a proper second walk.
What to expect
Manjal Jimalji is the second remote Grade 4 option, on the Mossman Gorge section but not at the tourist day-use area. It is longer and often harder than Mount Sorrow. The granite lookout is the turnaround.
The cultural significance (fire-creation site for Eastern Kuku Yalanji) is why you stay on the marked line. This guide does not speak for Traditional Owners.
Official planning range: 10.6 km return, Grade 4, allow 8+ hours. Wet-season closures happen. Always open the official journey page the morning you drive.
Who this walk is for
Very fit, experienced walkers who already know they can handle a no-water, no-bail-out rainforest climb. Not a first Daintree day. Not a “harder version of the Centre boardwalks.”
If the group wants granite river and a shuttle, that is the Mossman Gorge short walk network. If they want rainforest-meets-sea, that is Kulki north of the ferry.
Day shape, water and comms
Leave Mossman or Port Douglas in the dark in winter; earlier still in warmer months. Approach roads, the private-property walk-in, then 8+ hours return. You will not also “do the gorge boardwalks properly” the same day.
Bail-out: turn around. Stay on the marked trail. Carry 3–4 L. None on the trail. Download Emergency+ and offline maps. A satellite messenger is a planning note. We do not publish carrier maps.
Check alerts for closures before you commit the drive. A closed trail is not a suggestion.
What not to stack
Do not pair this with the Centre shuttle walks as a second “easy” afternoon. Do not pair it with Mount Sorrow the next morning unless the group is actually that fit and the weather is actually that kind.
Strong pair: sleep in Mossman, do this as the whole day, eat in town. Weak pair: a late start after café time in Port Douglas.

Extra tips
- Do this only after you already understand Daintree heat, leeches and navigation — not as a first-visit hero walk.
- Wet season: assume it may be closed — check park alerts the morning you leave.
- Cultural site — stay on the marked trail. Don’t wander off looking for a “better” view.
- Leave Mossman or Port Douglas in the dark in the cooler months; earlier still when it is hot.
- This is not Mount Sorrow. Different start, longer clock, no ferry — do not mix the two trip reports.
