Ferry closed or too late? Plan B is Mossman Gorge
If the Daintree Ferry is closed, queued, or you missed an honest Cape clock, switch to Mossman Gorge. Decision order — not a Bloomfield workaround.

Best for: Groups who booked Cape Tribulation and then saw a closed or late ferry
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Queensland Parks. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Queensland Parks imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park camping, the Daintree Ferry and the Mossman Gorge shuttle are never affiliated.

Decision first: if the ferry is closed, or you will hit Cape Tribulation Road after an honest turnaround time, Cape Tribulation by 2WD is off for that start. Mossman Gorge is the product. Bloomfield is not a 2WD workaround.
Order of operations: (1) open daintreeferry.com.au/status-updates before you leave Wi-Fi, (2) if it is closed or you are already late, drive to Mossman Gorge Centre, (3) take the shuttle — there is no footpath from the car park, (4) do not invent a swim in the Mossman River to “save the day.”
The ferry is a Douglas Shire / Birdon crossing, not a park permit. Hours on the operator page are 5am–midnight daily including Christmas Day — and it can still stop for defects. Some older Queensland Parks journey pages still say it skips Christmas and Good Friday. Treat the operator status page as the live clock.
Unofficial planning guide. Not walked for this article. Confirm ferry status, Centre shuttle hours and park alerts the morning you go.
What a closed or late ferry actually changes
Failure mode one: sitting at the ramp hoping a closed ferry reopens, then driving Bloomfield because “Cape is just up the road.” Bloomfield Track north of the village is 4WD, creek crossings, steep grades — not a conventional-car encore.
Failure mode two: arriving at Kulki with no southbound buffer, then stacking Mount Sorrow because the trailhead is 150 m further. That is how tired groups sit at the ramp after dark.
Plan B in decision order

Same calendar square, no ferry: Mossman Gorge Centre → shuttle → Baral Marrjanga and the river tracks. Last return 4:30pm. Screenshot Centre hours on Wi-Fi. Confirm on mossmangorge.com.au.
If the shuttle is also off (Christmas Day, or a Centre disruption): stay in Mossman or Port Douglas. Do not invent verge parking on Mossman Gorge Road.
If Cape was the point and the crossing is open tomorrow: sleep south, recross early. Official Noah Beach camping is a different product and still needs a booked site and an open ferry.
What not to invent
Do not copy a “we’ll just go around” script onto Bloomfield. Do not treat a river cruise or a GYG day as a substitute for Be Crocwise or shuttle hours.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can we wait at the ramp until it reopens?
Only if the operator page says a short delay and you still have a Cape turnaround that protects the southbound queue. An all-day wait is not a visit. Switch to Mossman.
Is a tour from Cairns Plan B?
A guided day can absorb the driving. It does not absorb a closed ferry if the product needs Cape Tribulation. Read the inclusions and still check status. This site never affiliates official ferry tickets.
Can we walk to Cape if the ferry is closed?
No useful pedestrian plan. Pedestrian ferry fares exist when the service runs. When it does not, you are south of the river. Mossman Gorge is the walk.
