Cairns same-day: Mossman + Cape + Sorrow is too long
A same-day Cairns out-and-back that stacks the gorge, the ferry and Mount Sorrow is the classic Daintree failure. Decision order for Port Douglas nights and what not to stack.

Decision first: if you are leaving a Cairns hotel the same morning and hoping to reverse the same night after Mossman Gorge, the ferry, Kulki and Mount Sorrow, the product is already broken. Pick one section. Overnight in Port Douglas (or north of the ferry) is the honest calendar square.
Order of operations: (1) put a Port Douglas night on the calendar, or accept Mossman Gorge only from Cairns, (2) pick Mossman or Cape — not both after lunch, (3) keep Mount Sorrow off any first-day stack.
Typical published ranges: Mossman Gorge is about 80 km / 1.25–1.5 hours from Cairns; Port Douglas is about 30–40 minutes from the gorge. The ferry is a separate clock once you go north. Those are planning ranges, not a diary of when we left.

What the Captain Cook Highway actually changes
Failure mode one: leaving Cairns after breakfast, paying the shuttle, then “quickly” crossing the ferry. Mid-morning northbound and mid-afternoon southbound are the queue windows. You spend the rainforest in a lane.
Failure mode two: stacking Mount Sorrow onto that reverse. Grade 4, 7 km return, allow 6 hours, no water, walkers have been lost. It needed the whole day from the night before.

Same-day from Cairns: Mossman Gorge only. Centre, shuttle, Baral Marrjanga, no swim, last return 4:30pm, reverse south. That is a complete Daintree day.
Cape is the point: sleep Port Douglas, recross early, Madja / Dubuji / Kulki, protect the southbound queue. Mount Sorrow stays off this clock.
Grade 4 is the point: sleep north of the ferry or accept a 5am Port Douglas start, and give the ridge the whole day. Read the Mount Sorrow trail page before you pack.
What not to invent
Do not copy a southern “leave the city at 7, icons by 10” script onto the Captain Cook Highway plus a tidal river crossing. There is no useful public transport into Cape Tribulation Road.

Can we do Mossman in the morning and Cape after lunch from Cairns?
Usually a bad plan. A half-day at the gorge plus a northbound ferry and Kulki is how people spend the afternoon in a queue. Pick one section unless you left early and have a written turnaround.
Is a Cairns pickup tour the exception?
A guided day can absorb the driving. It still does not absorb Be Crocwise, a last-shuttle miss, or Mount Sorrow fitness. Read inclusions. This site never affiliates official ferry tickets or the Centre shuttle.
Where do we sleep if Port Douglas is full?
Mossman, Daintree Village, or a booked Noah Beach site (Queensland Parks only — never affiliated). Cairns is the airport hub, not a Cape trailhead.
